Logo Design Tips for Branding for a Company or Startup
Once you have decided to start your business or your current business needs to rebrand, a logo design is one of the first things you need to come up with. A logo is many things but most importantly, it is important for your corporate identity and it is a symbol of your business to your potential clients, partners, employees and the community. We can develop a logo design and corporate identity with consistent branding for a company, startup or not-for-profit.
This can be a tedious task and I share with you my experience that will help you to have a bit more clarity.
- Timeless
Your logo should stand the test of time. You start a business for it to last and you want something that will look good over time. Changing a logo can be expensive. It will involve changing all your collateral like business cards, signboards, websites, etc so it is best to get it right the first time. A standout logo design will make a difference. - Simple
Keep your logo design simple. They demand instant recognition and will be remembered. Branding using your logo will compliment your business. - Flexible
Your logo will be seen in different media in different sizes. It is key that your logo can be scalable to look good in a billboard or you are sponsoring an event with many other sponsors and is printed very small. - Remember the logo won’t stand alone
Deciding on a logo design can be hard but a designer can guide you as they see the bigger picture. Your corporate identity and theme will enhance your logo and complement the logo ie. Your letterhead, business cards, profiles will have colour and design that will make the logo stand out. - It grows on you
Trust me over time your logo will grow on you and the theme too will complement the logo and it will come to life. Don’t get stuck deciding and scrutinizing the logo. This can lead to unwanted delays. - Survey
If you would like to get feedback from your team, family, friends, and potential clients on their preference, it is a good idea to do a quick survey. This will help you to zero in on the best logo option or variations of the logo. - Adaptable
A good logo design needs to look good on print as well as on online material like the website, email signature, and the like, so you should look at it in the varied platforms to see how well it reproduces. - A glimpse into your business
Your logo design should convey a feel of your business or services and the industry you are in. - Competition
It is always good to compare your logo to your competitors. See if all the competitor logos are placed together if it looks too similar or has the same colours and if it will stand out from the rest. Corporate identity being consistent will enhance your company to stand out from your competition. - Briefing the designer
Logo design has endless options so it is always a good idea to give a good brief to your designer ie: colour preferences, samples of logos you like, the tagline you plan to use, the main uses for your logo, if you will be printing in bulk (then my advice is to use 1 or 2 colours so you can reduce print costs) and future plans for the business so the logo stays relevant even when you expand to other areas.
